Magazine Mockup

Original:

1. For my masthead I used the name Manhwa Men because the theme of this magazine is men from different manhwas that I read. Manhwas are basically the Korean version of mangas. So, basically this magazine just suggests and describes these different men from the stories I read. 

2. The mood I set with in the cover is serious and seductive tone. Then, the way I arranged everything is so that the main focus on the cover is the man on it. I also added different fonts to all the different coverlines and kickers because I noticed that as a common pattern in famous magazine brands. I assume they do this so that everything’s not the same and boring to look at. For their colors I tried keeping them monotone except for that one in yellow because if I did either black or white it would’ve faded into the background which wouldn’t look good. So, I choose a bright yellow to pop off the background photo and create an eye catching kicker you should read.

3. The image I selected for the cover is a man from a manhwa I read called Painter of the Night. He’s one of the main characters in the story and the artwork for him is really gorgeous and has a beautiful style to it. It shows off Lord Seungho sitting down on what looks to be a maroon curtain or cloth. It’s drawn in what looks like a full body shot. The colors in it are less saturated, but around his eyes is somewhat of a orangish color light coming off him. He looks like he’s looking down on someone with arrogance. He’s also wearing half of a traditional Korean outfit called a hanbok. 

4. The strapline in my cover is where it states “Traditional Hanboks.” It suggests that the magazine will feature different types of traditional Korean wear. Some prominent linguistic features in this is that I’ve included Korean in some of the kickers. This is because manhwas are traditionally written in Korean so I thought it’d be nice to include Korean text in this, not only that but it looks nice next to the English text.

New:

1. The reasoning behind the masthead is because an otaku is a Japanese term for people with consuming interests, particularly in anime and manga. Then the overview part is saying that I’d go over recent anime news, reviews, etc.

2. The mood I went for the cover is more bubbly and cute. I thought it’d be a lot more appealing to people if I went for a more cutesy style. That’s why the fonts for the masthead and kickers are either more round and pixely ones. For the background picture, I choose a bright picture from a popular anime that I like, which I toned down slightly so it’s not too harsh for the eyes. Because I put a bright background, I thought it’d look better if the lettering would have more dull or toned down colors (black and white) that way it doesn’t detour from the image. Then I also put a black border around the image to give it a more professional feel to it. Which is also why I added a date and bar code too. 

3. Like I said before, the image is a picture from a popular anime called Banana Fish. The image I specifically chose features Ash (the blonde) and Eiji (black hair). As you can see in the background of the picture, they’re near the Statue of Liberty (meaning they’re in New York) and are wearing casual clothing. Ash is leaning up against the railing while Eiji is turning towards Ash. It’s almost a full body shot but not quite. I toned down the image's brightness by overlaying pink and turning the transparency down. I did this so it wasn’t too harsh and also gave it a softer look. 

4. The strapline says in both English and Japanese: Anime all day, every day! It suggests what this whole magazine is about and to continue to watch/read what you love. In the writing for the kickers, there’s excitement featured to get you hyped up too. Plus even though anime is technically Japanese, the magazine is in English because it’s been made by an American.
